It was a long ceremony for the Australian film creatives nominated for an Oscar in the 2023 Academy Awards ceremony. All went home empty handed.

Cate Blanchett, hotly tipped for her role in TÁR, was pipped by Michelle Yeoh, star of the multiverse action-comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All At Once, which, alongside the Netflix feature All Quiet on the Western Front, dominated the ceremony.

“Ladies,” said Yeoh on collecting her Oscar, “don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are past your prime.”

Brendan Fraser was awarded his first Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Whale. Former child star Ke Huy Quan (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) took home the best Supporting Actor statuette for his role in Everything Everywhere All At Once. The film also collected the awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (for Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Editing and Best Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. It was also awarded Best Picture.
