Limelight learned late last week of the death of Georg Pedersen, a performer, teacher, chamber musician and member of the Sydney Conservatorium community for four decades. His influence in that time extended well beyond the instution’s walls via the many students he taught and inspired.

“The Sydney Conservatorium has suffered a great loss in the passing of Georg Pedersen, a trusted friend, esteemed colleague, and much-respected pedagogue,” said fellow musician and colleague Phillip Shovk.

Georg Pedersen (1946-2026)

Born in Copenhagen, Pedersen studied cello in Paris with the French cellist Paul Tortelier before travelling to Los Angeles to study with Gregor Piatigorsky. He also studied chamber music with members of the Prague Quartet and Vlach Quartet.

His early career included work with the Royal Danish Philharmonic, as well as founding the Dania Quartet and Copenhagen Chamber Soloists. He went on to perform more than 3000 concerts in 24 countries as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral player.

In Australia he appeared as guest principal cello with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra, and performed with ensembles including the Sydney String Quartet, Australian Piano Trio, Sydney Trio...
