It’s surely no coincidence that Leo Brouwer’s Blue Mountains comes almost at the midpoint of this new album, as diverse as it is delicious, by guitar duo Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, which features works for the most part written especially for them. Because the two movements – Lentamente and Toccata Vivace – together encompass the dreamy lyricism and the propulsive energy found in different measures throughout the rest of the program.
Listen, for example, to the title track, by Luke Howard – ‘amistad’ is Spanish for friendship and the piece was inspired by Howard’s long friendship with the brothers. It builds to a gentle intensity but is for the most part gentle and reflective.
