It may be a first anywhere, and certainly hasn’t been done in Australia before, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s co-founder Paul Dyer is extremely proud of it.

For its latest tour the ABO is performing JS Bach’s four orchestral suites back-to-back – 80 minutes of Baroque music at its most glorious.

Introducing the concert, Artistic Director and co-founder Dyer said this “grandest performance of our season” was a chance to experience “the ultimate in orchestral drama and power of Baroque”.

Starting with the mighty majestic fanfare of the Suite No. 3 in D major – played by three valveless trumpets led by Leanne Sullivan – the evening lived up to the sales pitch for a night of Bach brilliance, “magnified and unleashed like never before!”

The blazing Ouverture also featured Brian Nixon on timpani and a trio of Baroque oboes, led by Adam Masters, took the ensuing fugue at a fair clip, with Dyer directing from the keyboard, periodically standing and dancing and urging his troops on.

Concertmaster Shaun Lee-Chen handled the famous Air sensitively while Dyer’s harpsichord provided a delicious delicate filigree.
