What a lovely concept: the great Maurizio Pollini’s final recording (he died in March this year at the age of 82), with his son Daniele sharing the stage, featuring Schubert’s Piano Sonata in G, D894 performed by Pollini père; the Moments musicaux, D780, performed by Pollini fils; before father and son coming together for the marvellous Fantasia in F minor for piano four hands, D940.

In many ways, Schubert’s G major is the perfect work for a pianist in his winter years, more contemplative and spacious than some of the stormier of the composer’s 15 piano sonatas. Pollini is of course no stranger to Schubert’s piano music, having recorded much of it over a long and illustrious career; but this performance is an opportunity to enjoy the poetic side of a pianist almost more famous for his formidable technique.
