Six thousand, two hundred feet above sea level at Jackson Hole (more renowned as a ski resort) lie the Grand Tetons within the Rocky Mountain range.

They are the site of a music festival which has been running since 1962 (beginning in a tent) but which seems to have existed under the international radar, unlike festivals at Tanglewood and Ravinia. Since 2005, it has been led by Scottish conductor Sir Donald Runnicles and has an orchestra (the GTMF) with a pool of 220 musicians, mainly from North America but some from Europe, who flock to Jackson Hole for varying periods over the two-month long festival.

What imbued the 2022 festival with particular distinction was the presence of Garrick Ohlsson performing Beethoven’s five piano concertos. Despite being one of the most overrepresented cycles in the repertoire, the combination of Runnicles, a keyboard master like Ohlsson and the Grand Teton orchestra was bound to add another dimension to the undertaking.
