With performance spaces in relatively short supply in Sydney, the opening of the Foundry Theatre is welcome news.

Situated at the back of the Sydney Lyric, the flexible, multi-purpose venue has a minimalist, no-fuss look, with space for up to 360 people seated and 630 standing.

Developed by Stephen Found’s Foundation Theatres, which also operates the Sydney Lyric and Sydney’s Capitol Theatre, the Foundry is accessed via the Sydney Lyric foyer.

And who better to open it than brilliant all-round entertainer Tim Minchin, who combines skills as a musician, singer, composer, lyricist, comedian, actor and activist?

Minchin now has such a following that he fills lyric theatres, concert halls and stadiums, so the chance to see him perform in an intimate venue like the Foundry was a gift for his fans. Not surprisingly, all five performances sold out in a flash.
