In 2012, Anne-Louise Sarks directed her first play on the mainstage: a production of Kate Mulvany’s The Seed for Melbourne Theatre Company. 

A decade on, she is Artistic Director and Co-CEO of the company and about to direct Theresa Rebeck’s comedy Bernhardt/Hamlet, with Mulvany – now a close friend and colleague – in the lead role.

It will be the first time Sarks has helmed an MTC production since taking up the Artistic Directorship in October 2021, following the launch of her predecessor Brett Sheehy’s final 2022 season.

When she talks to Limelight, rehearsals are about to begin – and she can’t wait.

“I’m really ready to go!” she says, laughing. “I’m longing to be back in a rehearsal room. I really feel at the centre of myself in that space, collaborating with actors and creatives.”
