With a list of past students including Lucy Clifford, Titus Grenyer, Lorraine Moxey, Jane Aubourg and David Piper to boast of, it seems that the Wollongong Conservatorium has a lot to celebrate in its 50th year in 2022. Its birthday concert, Inspired By Wollongong: Steel And Sentiment In Sound, marks the occasion with two world premieres by alumni Matthew Hindson and Novak Manojlovic, to be performed by WollCon’s BlueScope Youth Orchestra, the Con Jazz Orchestra and vocal ensemble the Hummingbirds, alongside its Con Artists and band-in-residence, the Hot Potato Band.

“My concept was for these two works to have real connections with Wollongong – not least, so there is an immediate connection with the local young players who will premiere both pieces,” Wollongong Conservatorium CEO David Francis tells Limelight.

Matthew Hindson’s composition, Big Steel, is an orchestral work exalting the “absolute enormity of the testament to human endeavour” that are the steelworks at Port Kembla.
