Les Misérables will make its Sydney Opera House debut in 2027, with Opera Australia announcing a season of Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production at the Joan Sutherland Theatre from 27 August.
The return marks the first Australian season of the fully staged production in more than a decade, following a previous run that broke box-office records. The Sydney season will also coincide with 40 years since the musical first premiered in Australia in 1987.

Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s musical has been seen by more than 150 million people across 57 countries and translated into 22 languages. It celebrated its 40th anniversary in London’s West End last October.
Among the most successful musicals of all time, Les Misérables has won more than 275 major awards, including eight Tony Awards, five Olivier Awards and five Helpmann Awards.
Opera Australia Director of Opera Amy Lane said bringing the production to the company’s home stage was a significant milestone.
“Les Misérables is one of the defining musical theatre works of the modern era,” Lane said, describing it as a work of extraordinary emotional power that had connected generations of audiences.
Producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh said he was delighted to bring the production back to Australia, where audiences had embraced it over the years.
“To finally see it on the stage of the Sydney Opera House is something I have been dreaming of for years,” he said.

The announcement follows the recent conclusion of Les Misérables: The Arena Concert Spectacular, which sold more than 1.3 million tickets across 35 cities worldwide, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
The 2027 Sydney season is supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW.
Priority pre-sale access to single tickets begins on 27 October 2026, with general sales opening on 3 November. Early access is available to Opera Australia subscribers booking two or more productions in the company’s 2027 Sydney season.
