Sydney Theatre Company has announced its 2024 season, and it’s a big program with 15 productions, 11 of which are written or adapted by Australian writers.
Highlights include a ‘cine-theatre’ production of Dracula, adapted by STC Artistic Director Kip Williams, new plays by Angus Cerini and Anchuli Felicia King, a co-production with Dublin’s Gate Theatre, and a new production of the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen.
The season opens in February with A Fool in Love, Van Badham’s new adaptation of La dama boba, the 1613 comedy by Spanish playwright Lope de Vega.
Speaking to Limelight, Williams says, “The title of the Lope de Vega play translates as The Stupid Woman, which is a pretty problematic and nasty title –and ripe for the eviscerating satire of Van Badham. It’s an hysterically funny piece, a laugh-out-loud farce looking at the politics of marriage, love, class and money in the 21st century.”
