The Australian Chamber Orchestra saluted the Time Lord in their latest voyage of the imagination. Had Daleks come rolling down the aisles of the City Recital Hall screaming “Exterminate! Exterminate!” no one would have been surprised.

Directed by Richard Tognetti and joined by Goldfrapp synth pop duo co-founder Will Gregory and his Moog Ensemble, A Clockwork Orange and Beyond tracked the massive influence Dr Robert Moog’s digital music box of tricks has had on our culture – particularly on film music through the likes of composer-performers such as Wendy Carlos and the late Vangelis.

And, of course, no survey of electronic music would be complete without Australian composer Ron Grainger’s theme tune for Dr Who, transformed beyond all recognition from his original sketch by Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and here lovingly reproduced by Gregory’s quartet of synthesisers.

Nor should we forget Vangelis’s creations for the blockbuster movies Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, themes which had the packed audience sighing and smiling in recognition of hours spent a long time ago in darkened cinemas.
