If, at first glance, that suggests something indigestible, more witches’ brew than moreish musical cocktail, the result is nonetheless intriguing. Let’s start with the minuses. Absent here are pieces by Karol Szymanowski and Wojciech Kilar included in a program the ACO first performed in 2019 and recently reprised in its first post-COVID tour to the UK in late 2022. Both could have added extra context and necessary ballast. With a playing time of just under an hour, this recording, captured live in Perth Concert Hall in the pre-pandemic innocence of 2019, could have accommodated at least one of those pieces. Their absence arguably dilutes an otherwise engaging disc but doesn’t render it any the less persuasive.
