A big, expensive musical production is, more often than not, an enjoyable experience. However, as this new Kinky Boots reminds us, a little company with plenty of talent and enthusiasm can put on a very entertaining show too.

James Terry Collective’s new production is directed by Martin Croft, who was resident director of Kinky Boots’ original Australian tour. This kind of ambition is evident in many aspects of the show, from not skimping on eye-catching boots to the well rehearsed choreography – which is so important on Chapel Off Chapel’s small stage. In turn, the venue’s modest size has the advantage of letting everyone in the audience feel close to the action.

Written by Harvey Fierstein with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots is an adaptation of the 2005 British film of the same name, which itself was inspired by real events. Winner of six Tony Awards in 2013, including best musical and score, it follows Charlie who suddenly inherits his father’s venerable but failing shoe factory.
