The Primrose Potter Salon has been home to many amazing and memorable performances, but The Cloud Maker takes things to another level. From the moment the five women walk on stage, the audience is captivated. By the time they finish, this commanding ensemble receives the standing ovation it deserves for its exhilarating performance.

The Cloud Maker is the work of five exceptional musicians: Aviva Endean on clarinets, winds and electronics; Te Kahureremoa Taumata on taonga pūoro (flutes or “singing treasures”) and voice; Sunny Kim, voice; Freya Schack-Arnott on cello and nyckelharpa; and Maria Moles on drums. The collaboration was born when Endean, Taumata and Kim met in Canada during a residency.

This show is one of a number The Cloud Maker has performed as part of their 2025 album launch. Since seeing it last week, I’ve heard tell of a show they gave earlier this year at a warehouse in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote. A storm had been brewing all day, but it was when the majestic Te Kahureremoa Taumata commenced singing that the rain came down.
