I’ll admit that I’m a little puzzled as to how to review this, because it 1000 percent was not a Topology gig in the slightest. It’s billed on both the Princess Theatre and Topology sites as “Toplogy and Gaba Musik”, implying some kind of deep collaboration – but it was not that.
This was absolutely a Gaba Musik gig (if you’re wondering, Gaba Musik is a fantastic initiative launched a few years ago by Deline Briscoe to highlight Indigenous music from across the Pacific), with Topology in the background as a backing band.
So I think that reviewing this not as a Topology gig at all, but instead as a rock gig (which also makes much more sense given the venue — the Princess Theatre, where the last gig I saw was the experimental punk weirdos Osees rather than anything remotely close to Topology’s art music) is just about the only way to tackle it.
