The Australian String Quartet kicks off a 2022 national tour at Adelaide’s Town Hall with a world premiere of Jack Symonds’ String Quartet No 2, performed alongside Beethoven’s String Quartet in C-sharp Minor. 

The current Artistic Director of Sydney Chamber Opera, Symonds is also a composer and conductor whose body of work includes Climbing Towards Midnight, a chamber opera premiered in by Sydney Chamber Opera and Shape of the Earth, a staged song cycle performed at Carriageworks’ 2018 Resonant Bodies Festival by Symonds, singer Mitchell Riley, and electronic performer and composer Ben Carey, under the direction and design of Alexander Berlage.

Symonds’ work was originally commissioned by the ASQ for the  ANAM Quartetthaus, as a part of the 2021-22 UK/Australia Season. Ahead of its premiere, he discusses his new work and how a refined engagement with Romantic and Classical canon shapes his unique compositional style.
