We are immensely saddened to inform readers that Limelight publisher Robert Veel passed away unexpectedly on 3 October, aged 61, while leading an arts tour in Venice – a city he loved.

As well as publishing Limelight with Bruce Watson, Robert was a director and tour leader of Limelight Arts Travel. Everyone at the two companies is devastated by his loss. Our thoughts are with his family, particularly his partner and sisters.

A passionate lover of art, history, languages and the performing arts, Robert had an insatiable appetite for learning. Furthermore, he had a passion for communicating what he learned, and throughout his professional and private lives, he transmitted this in generous, engaging ways, whether as a lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Sydney or while leading small cultural tours.

It is thanks to him that Limelight still exists today. His deep commitment to the arts drove his decision to purchase the business in 2018 with Bruce. Together, they supported the publication through the COVID lockdowns, so that arts companies, performers and audiences could continue to access...
