Musica Viva: Van Diemen’s Band
International borders, the cause of so much angst of late, haven’t always been so inviolable and fixed: this concert features music made by composers who lived in hotly-contested regions, the flags flying from the local keep changing as frequently as the wind ruffling them. But from this geopolitical soup came a fascinating blend of styles and influences. Hear works by 17th-century European composers Dietrich Becker, Samuel Scheidt, Tomaso Albinoni and Heinrich Biber alongside a piece by Icelandic composer María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir and a new work by Van Diemen’s Band harpsichordist and organ player Donald Nicolson.
