Whodunnit fans should be in their element right now, with the chance to immerse themselves in a double dose of related murder mysteries. A 70th-anniversary production of Agatha Christie’s record-breaking play The Mousetrap is about to hit Australian stages, while the wonderfully entertaining film See How They Run, set in 1953 at the West End theatre where The Mousetrap is playing, is now in cinemas.

The Mousetrap is the longest running play in the world. It had its world premiere on 6 October 1952 at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, then went on a brief tour before opening at the Ambassadors Theatre in London’s West End on 25 November, 1952. It ran there until 23 March, 1974 when it transferred to the larger St Martin’s Theatre.

Agatha Christie originally wrote the story as a short radio play titled Three Blind Mice, which was broadcast as a birthday present for Queen Mary in 1947. She adapted it into a short story and then rewrote it again for the stage, renaming it The Mousetrap.
