Remi Wörtmeyer, who began his dancing career with The Australian Ballet, has been appointed as the new Artistic Director of American company BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio.
Selected after an international search, Wörtmeyer was one of 80 applicants. He replaces Edwaard Liang, who has held the position for the last 11 years. Established in 1978, BalletMet stages 60 to 70 performances each year and puts a priority on new works.

Born in Adelaide, Wörtmeyer graduated from The Australian Ballet School in 2001. He joined The Australian Ballet (TAB) the following year, rising through the ranks to become a soloist. In 2006, during this time with TAB, he spent six months with New York’s American Ballet Theatre.
In 2010, he joined Dutch National Ballet (DNB) where he rose to become a Principal Dancer in 2013. He also worked for the company as a choreographer, costume designer and academy teacher. In 2022, he retired from performing to focus on choreography.
Over the course of his career, Wörtmeyer has choreographed more than 30 ballets for companies including DNB, Atlanta Ballet, TAB, Queensland Ballet and Melbourne Ballet Company.
