Award-winning percussion virtuoso Claire Edwardes switches between vibraphone and marimba for what she describes as “an arrival point for my career” on her album Dual Attractor – the first release on her own label. It’s a brilliantly performed mix of works she has commissioned alongside new arrangements of older works by six female composers, including Edwardes herself for the title track for drums and electronics, co-written by Sydney Con lecturer Paul (Mac) McDermott.

It starts off gently with Missy Mazzoli’s Orizzonte (Horizons) for vibraphone and electronics, originally written for piano in 2004 when Mazzoli and Edwardes studied together in Amsterdam. Also from the US, Caroline Shaw’s marimba and voice solo In manus tuas (2009) is based on Thomas Tallis’s motet, snatches of which are deftly woven into its hypnotic chordal fabric.
