“World’s greatest film composer and world’s greatest orchestra – what’s not to like?” You might quibble with either statement, but that would frankly be splitting hairs. For lovers of film music, lovers of orchestral fare with a late-romantic turn of mind, or simply for those who like a big tune delivered with heart, this two-disc souvenir of a Berlin concert to pre-celebrate the composer’s 90th birthday would be hard to beat.

Born 8 February 1932, Williams’ career has spanned nearly seven decades during which time he has composed some of the most instantly recognizable and critically acclaimed film scores in the history of the cinema. The stats say it all: 25 Grammy wins, five Oscars, seven BAFTAS and four Golden Globes. His 52 Academy Award nominations makes him the second most-nominated individual after Walt Disney, and in 2005, the American Film Institute selected Star Wars as the greatest film score of all time.
