This year’s season of The Nutcracker coincides with Li Cunxin’s last as artistic director, due to ill-health. The production’s final curtain on December 20 will also sadly bring to a close the most successful era in Queensland Ballet’s history.

The 11-year stewardship of “Mao’s Last Dancer” has been crammed with notable achievements, many of which will be revisited in a special tribute program, Love and Legacy: Celebrating Li Cunxin AO, also at the Playhouse, December 12–13.

In the meantime, the Christmas tradition he introduced at the beginning of his term is underway again. It was clear from the reactions around me that The Nutcracker remains an audience favourite. Tchaikovsky’s transportive score is even more special played live by Queensland Symphony Orchestra (some performances will use recorded music).

Even those of us who’ve seen the production every year can find something different to enjoy in the changing casts annually and within the season.

This season features five rotating line-ups, with company artists and Jette Parker Young Artists given their chance to shine in the central role of Clara.
