If you were impressed by Australian tenor Andrew Goodwin’s Lieder recording debut singing Schumann on the Danish independent Walkway Records label, then this second outing with pianist Daniel de Borah on ABC Classic will knock you dead.
The pair met when they were studying in St Petersburg and their chemistry and affinity for Russian music makes this collection of songs by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov a must-have. Goodwin’s lithe sweet timbre and feeling for the text, and de Borah’s innate sense of nuance and poetry, make for a special partnership and cement the arrival of a Lieder duo from the top echelon.
Goodwin first impressed on his return to Australia with a recital of Rachmaninov’s songs at the 2008 Musica Viva Festival. Since then, he has appeared with Pinchgut and many of Australia’s top orchestras and choirs. His 2017 appearance with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs in Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius was a standout.
