To say Deborah Cheetham Fraillon is always on the go would be an understatement. The Yorta Yorta soprano, composer and educator now divides her time between Melbourne, where she is the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s First Nations Creative Chair, and Sydney, where she has just moved to become the inaugural Elizabeth Todd Chair of Vocal Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She lives with her wife Nicolette Fraillon, who recently concluded a 20-year engagement as The Australian Ballet’s Music Director & Chief Conductor.

“It’s wonderful. Dance and music go hand in hand,” Cheetham Fraillon laughs, describing their home life as “noisy”.

“We were married in January this year, and we recently gave our first performance together with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.” The program included Cheetham Fraillon’s Acknowledgement of Country, Tarimi Nulay, which she sang with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, and Baparripna featuring William Barton.
