In 2011, Micheal Do, the Sydney Opera House’s Curator of Contemporary Art, approached Sydney-based dancer and choreographer Angela Goh to ask if she was interested in a making a new work that incorporated the acoustic reflectors, affectionately known as ‘the doughnuts’, which used to hang in the Concert Hall.

The circular Perspex reflectors had been removed during the $200 million refurbishment of the Concert Hall and replaced with state-of the-art fibreglass boards, resembling petals. The Sydney Opera House wanted to commission an artist to give the doughnuts new life. Intrigued, Goh accepted the commission.

“I had actually never been into the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall before,” she says, “so my knowledge of the acoustic reflectors has all been through the lens of the heritage reports that detail their history, material condition and cultural value.”
