It was impossible to watch Queensland Ballet’s current program without thinking of the company’s financial difficulties and need to restructure.

Two of the choreographers, Natalie Weir and Jack Lister, had formal connections with the company that quietly ended some time ago.

The third, Greg Horsman, is described in the Triple Bill program as having been QB Assistant Artistic Director “until 2025”. He is still listed on the QB website as being in the role but whatever the timing, Horsman won’t be at the company after the Triple Bill season.

Music Director and Chief Conductor Nigel Gaynor, who is in the pit directing Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, goes at the end of the year.

There are fewer dancers than there were last year, although the company still numbers about 50 (including 12 Young Artists), a reasonable size. Some backroom jobs have been shed.

Despite all that – and it’s a big amount of “that” – it is encouraging and perhaps necessary at this time to see a program that exalts the fine QB dancers as a group.
