West Australian Symphony Orchestra: Sibelius’ Second Symphony
“My second symphony is a confession of the soul,” Sibelius said, composing it during the period of Finland’s Russification. With its triumphant conclusion, it became synonymous with the struggle for liberty and Sibelius was elevated to the status of a national hero in his homeland. This timely concert by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by compatriot Pietari Inkinen. It also includes Wagner’s overture from Tannhäuser. Soprano Sara Macliver and mezzo-soprano Fiona Campbell will join the second and third concerts in this series for the world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin’s Ave Maria.
